For those interested in graduate work
Finding the right advisor for graduate school is about fit. Please take the time to look over this website and my publications. If what you find is not interesting to you , that may be a sign that we’re not a good fit! Please read one or two of my publications before contacting me about graduate work. If you find this unbearable or boring, it probably won't work out. The closer your interests are to mine, the better I will be able to support and help you to create and maintain a vibrant graduate school experience.
Funding is a very important part of graduate school. At UVM, we cannot support graduate students without a specific funding source. For the 2021-2022 year, I am on sabbatical and am not recruiting graduate students for funded positions.
If you are interested in a MS, PhD, or postdoc position in my lab that or MS and a postiand the "maple ecosystem services" position does not fit your interests, you can consider applying for a Gund PhD (details here) or Postdoctoral fellowship. If you would like to pursue this option with me as an advisor, please see and follow the "two tips and thoughts" below. If it seems like a fit, please then email me with specific proposal ideas.
Applying to UVM
To work with me here at UVM, you need to apply to the Graduate College to be admitted as a student in the Rubenstein School. The Rubenstein School graduate program webpage has all you need to know about the UVM application process; note that one necessary step is contacting Carolyn Goodwin Kueffner if you decide to apply. In your application essay, please clearly state your interest in working with me, and note any communication we have had.

- Think through precisely why you want a graduate degree, and what type of graduate degree. I am a deeply interdisciplinary scholar, so students who work with me are likely to be interdisicplinarians. I love this; for me it works wonderfully. But it’s a particular choice within academia. I feel like it’s a wonderful way to creatively address problems, but it might make it more difficult to find an academic job when you finish (although I think this is changing).
