Anti-racism and Equity
Diversifying higher education requires that we ensure equitable access to opportunities for all, including scholars of different races, ethnicities, religions, gender identities, socioeconomic status, and experience. In the Adair Lab we work to create a dynamic, inclusive, and welcoming scientific community. If you are interested in joining our lab, check out our code of conduct here and field safety document here.
Below are some useful resources for supporting and learning about diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Our research at UVM and in Vermont takes place largely on Abenaki land. There are four Abenaki tribes in Vermont: the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk-Abenaki (Northeast Kingdom, VT), the Elnu Abenaki (SE Vermont), the Sokoki or the Abenaki Nation at Missisquoi (NW Vermont) and the Koas Abenaki Nation (NE & Central VT and NH). Resources for educating yourself on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism*:
- Unlearning Racism in Geoscience (URGE) has resources on taking anti-racist actions within science and academia
- AdvanceGeo Partnership has resources on strategies to combat harassment and hostile climates and also conducts workshops addressing misconduct, intervention, and cultural change. Community resources incude links on a variety of topics including how to create inclusive virtual spaces and address (in)equity during COVID-19.
- An equity reading list compiled by Dr. Needhi Bhalla from UC Santa Cruz (resources on experience, hiring, retention of POC in academia).
- A reading list on the connections between racism and the environment, compiled by Somini Sengupta (New York Times).
- A reading list of scholarly works on race and racism in STEM and academia (google sheet).
- And here are a few recommendations for readings I have found particularly helpful:
- 10 simple rules for building an anti-racist lab
- Anti-racist interventions to transform ecology, evolution, and conservation biology departments
- So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo (amazon link)
- Writing letters of reference for POC (Berhe and Kim) link
Resources for learning about academia and graduate school*
- the Academic Secret Menu - this resource compiles links, advice, questions, and answers about how to navigate academic environments. Particularly useful for those of you (like me) who may be first generation academics.
